In Shezidao, Taiwan, local youth carry the statue of the Earth God door-to-door every Lantern Festival to offer blessings. They also set off firecrackers around the deity; it is believed that the more firecrackers are detonated, the more prosperous the coming year will be. Participating in the procession is a way for young people to show their commitment to the community and prove they have come of age.
